ROLE: E D I T O R
ASSEMBLY CUT
FINAL PRODUCT
For this particular product, I am satisfied with my contribution as editor. I was involved in a lot of the pre-production including the making of the storyboard, planning of the shots (within the shotlist). Also, I was responsible for coming up with the story (brainstorm) and writing some of the screenplay to go with it.
EVALUATION
My film was called Snapshot and the genre was Teen Drama, there were 4 people involved in the making of this film. Within the group, my role was the editor but I also helped with a lot of the other production (sound, cinematography).
For research, I watched a few different teen dramas to figure out what shots would fit our film. For example, I watched Stranger Things and Everything Sucks and incorporated similar shots into the video.
After researching, I created the storyboard for the film, planning and drawing out shots I saw previously.
This is a picture of the storyboard I drew out.
Along with this, some other preproduction I did was plan out the shotlist, I was the one who actually came up with the story idea and I wrote most of the screenplay to go with it. Lastly, I helped plan out the location for production.
For the screenplay, the shows I watched also helped me develop realistic conversations and characters’ behaviours.

RESEARCH
PREPRODUCTION

EVIDENCE
For my storyboard, quite a few of the scenes I planned out were used and can be seen in our final product.
The first couple of scenes where the camera pans down, the actors’ actions and such were included in my planning.
Some of the shots written out in the shotlist were also used while filming.
In terms of contribution, I was the most involved in planning and preproduction. I think I did alright in the area but there are definitely some improvements that could have been made, for example, my storyboard was short and didn’t display all of the scenes that we filmed causing some shots to look messy. Therefore to improve, I should be more thorough.
For production, we went to a few places to shoot: Choi Hung Estate, TST and the school. My main role in all of this was to help arrange where the camera was to be placed and what positions the actors should be in (since I made the storyboard and shotlist).
When filming, the biggest challenge was finding the right time to film and when everyone was available. Since the film needed so many actors it held up the production process, but I was eventually able to organize dates in which everyone was able to go.
The preproduction Imadewasmostly useful, especially the storyboard and screenplay. As shown before, a lot of the shots I planned out were used.
Overall, I did not contribute as much in production as I would have liked to. As the editor, I mainly just helped the cinematographer organize the shots but there was not much else I could do.

In post-production, I organized the clips and audio together, editing and cutting down all of the clips we filmed.
As you can see below, I edited all of the clips taken and put the sound together. I added transitions that went with the scenes and cropped a few clips. Also, even though I was not in charge of sound I was the one who adjusted most of it so that the volume of them would all be relatively the same (I did not record the sound though).
The biggest challenge I went through while doing this was the fact that I did not have enough footage and audio files to work with despite thinking there was plenty. Along with this, the sound quality from the microphone was not actually the best and I had to do a lot of readjustments to try and fix it. I wasn’t quite able to overcome these problems as no one was available to re-film so I tried my best with what I had to work with.
All in all, I did a lot of post-production with editing. Obviously, a lot could be improved in this if I had filmed more shots and had better sound. But my skills in levelling and improving the audio could definitely be worked on.
EVIDENCE

In conclusion, I am okay with my final product but I don’t think its likely appeal to an audience. The plot is a bit confusing and unclear, though matches a lot of standard/typical teen dramas but production-wise, a lot could be improved.
I am satisfied with my individual performance as I was heavily involved in this project especially in the preproduction and post-production. As a group member, I was able to help out other roles. And most of my research regarding shots, storyline and the screenplay was put to use.
My time management could be improved: filming dates and days editing. If I had better time management I could have gotten feedback a lot sooner and it definitely would have helped me a lot. But still, I was able to seek advice and make a few small improvements.
With my role as the editor, I was engaged in putting and cutting the clips to fit together and putting the dialogue/sound together (I did not record the sound). I also had to fix and fiddle with the dynamics of the sound so that the audience could hear it well enough.
